Arkema Completes Modernization and Decarbonization at Its Lacq/Mourenx Site
Arkema has announced the completion of the modernization and decarbonization project at its Lacq/Mourenx site, which specializes in sulfur-based specialty derivatives.
Completion of Modernization and Decarbonization Program
According to the press release, Arkema has successfully completed a modernization and decarbonization program at its Lacq/Mourenx site. Following an initial investment launched in 2022 that achieved a 28% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, the project continued with the construction of a new sulfur effluent treatment unit. This new equipment utilizes a process considered more efficient, reducing sulfur dioxide emissions by 40% and further cutting greenhouse gas emissions by over 10%, as reported by the company. A portion of the investment, totaling 40 million euros, was funded by the state as part of the France 2030 plan operated by ADEME.
Introduction of a Sulfuric Acid Production Process
The project also includes the implementation of a sulfuric acid production process. According to Arkema, this acid will be used as a raw material by other industrial sites, aligning with the group's circular economy approach. The company also notes that this modernization will reduce the water consumption of the site, although the exact extent of this reduction was not specified.
Arkema's Business Segments and Financial Performance
Arkema emphasizes in its press release that it is structured around three main segments - Adhesives, Advanced Materials, and Coating Solutions - which are projected to account for 92% of its revenue in 2024, with the remainder coming from the Intermediates segment. The group, which positions itself as a technological player in specialty materials, reported a revenue of approximately 9.5 billion euros in 2024 and employs 21,150 staff across nearly 55 countries.
