Saint-Gobain stock pierces its moving averages, -12% in one month
Saint-Gobain is amplifying its decline sequence on Monday, as a balanced session for the CAC 40 approaches its close. The construction materials specialist's share remains stuck below all of its moving averages, in a European construction environment that offers it little support.
A decline that fits into a downward trend spanning several weeks
Saint-Gobain loses 1.45% during the session at 74.68 €, while the CAC 40 edges up slightly by 0.32%. The group is among the weakest performers in the index on Monday, in a market that is nonetheless not having a difficult day. Today's decline fits into a broader dynamic: losses have reached nearly 12% over one month, following several sessions of decline that have marked recent weeks.
Over one year, the decline exceeds 18%. This somber technical context is reflected in sectoral data: the construction climate in France stood at -18.2 in August according to European cyclical indicators, compared to -6.7 for the eurozone average, while housing permits have fallen 8% over twelve months. This framework weighs on activity expectations in residential construction, a sector where Saint-Gobain remains significantly exposed.
A technical configuration under pressure, with the 72.84 € support level in sight
The RSI at 34 reflects persistent selling momentum, without yet reaching the extreme overbought threshold. The stock is trading at 74.68 €, below its 20-day moving average at 81.44 € (gap of 8.30%), its 50-day moving average at 79.13 € (gap of 5.62%) and its 200-day moving average at 80.00 € (gap of 6.65%): all three moving averages confirm a negative underlying trend across all timeframes. The MACD, whose histogram stands in negative territory at -0.92, is not sending a reversal signal at this stage.
The next level to watch is the support at 72.84 €, or less than 2.5% below the current price. This threshold had already attracted attention during the declines of previous weeks. Its holding or breach will constitute the next test for this stock, which has not yet shown any sign of stabilization.
