Bouygues Secures Contract for New University Hospital in Montenegro
Bouygues Bâtiment International has been selected to design and construct a new university hospital in Montenegro, as part of an intergovernmental agreement between France and this Balkan country. The contract was signed on Wednesday, June 17, with the Montenegrin Ministry of Public Works.
A 562-Bed Facility in Podgorica
The new University Hospital Center will be located in Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, on the site of the current Clinical Center. The complex will include 562 beds and will be affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montenegro. It will feature a complete operating block with 14 rooms for adults and 5 for children, 117 intensive care beds, an emergency department, laboratory facilities, and medical education spaces (library, amphitheater).
Environmental and Seismic Standards
The facility aims to achieve a LEED Silver environmental certification and will comply with the European directive on energy performance. The building will adhere to nearly zero energy building (NZEB) standards with a goal to reduce energy consumption by at least 10% compared to national thresholds, and will be equipped with solar panels. Given Montenegro's location in an active seismic region, Bouygues Bâtiment International will implement specific engineering solutions, including the use of prestressed slabs, to ensure the resilience of the complex.
Construction Schedule and Continuity of Care
The construction will engage up to 700 workers and will be carried out in successive phases to allow the current Clinical Center to continue operating during the works. The first phase, focusing on the completion of the design, was launched in June 2026. The execution phase is expected to commence in 2027, following the completion of the financing plan.
