Bureau Veritas Validates Conversion of North Sea Pipeline for CO₂
Bureau Veritas has completed the assessment and requalification of the Petrogas pipeline for transporting carbon dioxide in the Dutch North Sea, marking a first in the field. This technical validation represents a major milestone for the Abeona carbon capture and storage project in the Netherlands.
A First in Reusing an Oil Pipeline in the North Sea
Bureau Veritas announces the successful completion of the assessment and requalification of the 20-inch Petrogas pipeline linking the Q1 platform to the EVOS terminal. This operation represents the first conversion of an existing oil pipeline in the Dutch North Sea for the transport of gaseous CO2, associated with an offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain. The evaluation was conducted over more than 1.5 years and concluded on May 28, 2026. The final report confirms that no limiting conditions were identified during the initiation and screening phase, allowing progression to the next phase of requalification. This technical and regulatory step validates the feasibility of converting legacy oil exploitation infrastructures for CO2 transport.
A Model for Reusing Offshore Assets
The Abeona CCS project demonstrates how existing oil and gas assets can be transformed to support the energy transition in a safe and scalable manner. Internationally and onshore in the Netherlands, the reuse of existing oil and gas pipelines has already been realized and has been operating safely for over a decade. Bureau Veritas provided an independent assessment based on the Dutch mining framework, including risk analysis and technical verification. This validation remains partial: further validation, an evaluation of the execution phase, commissioning approval, and a time-limited fitness certificate will be necessary before a final long-term operational certification. Nevertheless, the milestone reached on Tuesday is a key step for the industrial decarbonization of the Netherlands, particularly in the Greater Amsterdam area.
