Philips: Grant Potentially Reaching $33.7M from ARPA-H for Stroke Robotics
The Dutch group has been selected by the American ARPA-H agency to develop AI-assisted robotic automation technologies for endovascular stroke interventions. The project involves several American academic partners.
A Grant Potentially Reaching $33.7M Under the AIR Program
Philips announced on August 26, 2026 that it has received a grant potentially reaching $33.7 million under the Autonomous Interventions and Robotics (AIR) program of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), an agency attached to the United States Department of Health (HHS).
The project aims to advance AI-assisted robotic automation of procedures for stroke treatment. The group specifies that this work is based on its Azurion image-guided therapy platform.
According to the company, the objective is to expand access to advanced endovascular interventions, remotely and increasingly automated, while maintaining clinical supervision by experts.
A Consortium with Johns Hopkins and Boston University
Philips will collaborate with Johns Hopkins University and Boston University, as well as with Dr. J Mocco from Weill Cornell Medicine. Johns Hopkins University will be responsible for developing autonomous navigation of devices, while Boston University will develop steerable catheters.
The program will focus on endovascular navigation, robotic control of devices, procedural image guidance, workflow automation and remote intervention.
The group indicates that it has more than 20,000 image-guided therapy systems installed in more than 80 countries. It specifies that the technologies described are under development and that their future clinical use or commercial availability will be subject to applicable regulatory requirements.
