Sodexo Secures a 7-Year Contract with Rio Tinto in Australia
Sodexo has been awarded a Facilities Management contract for Rio Tinto's facilities in the Pilbara region, Western Australia. The contract, lasting seven years with an option to extend for three additional years, will commence in June 2026.
A Contract for Residential and Operational Facilities Management
Sodexo won this new contract after a rigorous selection process among global partners. It follows a previous 10-year contract between Rio Tinto and Sodexo. The contract includes the management of rotational accommodation villages (FIFO), residential housing, and Rio Tinto's operational sites. It was co-designed by both partners, with a strong emphasis on using local suppliers and supporting employment for indigenous populations.
A Broad Scope of Services in the Pilbara
Sodexo will provide a wide range of essential services including accommodation, catering, retail, access to health and wellness programs, cleaning, transportation, aerodrome management, maintenance of outdoor spaces, and building maintenance. The contract includes the maintenance and renovation of 2,900 Rio Tinto homes and over 19,000 FIFO accommodation rooms across 25 villages in the Pilbara. Sodexo also manages community facilities (local pools, sports fields, parks, and shops) in Pannawonica, Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Dampier, and Wickham.
Jobs and Service Volumes in Western Australia
The contract will continue to support around 2,500 Sodexo jobs in Western Australia, approximately 2,250 of which are in the Pilbara. In addition to managing villages and housing, Sodexo serves around 14 million meals per year to Rio Tinto teams. In the previous year, Sodexo organized 3 million worker travel movements covering 10 million kilometers and managed more than 12,000 flights per year carrying 620,000 passengers. During the same period, Sodexo teams registered nearly 300,000 residents and cleaned 735,000 rooms.
