Van Lanschot Kempen Joins EPI and to Integrate Wero into Its Private Banking by Late 2026
Van Lanschot Kempen becomes a principal member of the European Payments Initiative (EPI) and will introduce Wero, a pan-European digital payment solution, into its private banking platform. The rollout is scheduled for the end of 2026.
Strategic Membership in the European Payments Initiative
Van Lanschot Kempen has become a principal member of the European Payments Initiative, joining the project aimed at developing an alternative European payment system. This membership includes the integration of Wero, a digital payment solution developed by EPI, directly into Van Lanschot Kempen's digital banking environment. Wero will allow the group's wealth clients to make payments across Europe while remaining within their usual banking interface.
Meeting Client Expectations in Cross-Border Payments
According to Erwin Schoeters, managing director of Private Clients Nederland and head of payment solutions at Van Lanschot Kempen, this initiative meets the growing demand from clients operating beyond national borders. Erwin Schoeters states that Wero offers "a secure and straightforward way to make payments throughout Europe, directly within their trusted banking environment." The solution focuses on security, ease of use, and interoperability, with the potential to add additional payment functionalities in the future.
Enhancing Digital and European Positioning
This integration is part of a strategy to strengthen Van Lanschot Kempen's digital services and capture cross-border payment flows. Martina Weimert, CEO of the European Payments Initiative, praises Van Lanschot Kempen as "the oldest financial institution in the Netherlands" for its forward-thinking spirit and commitment to offering the best in the market to its clients. She also notes that the addition of the first wealth manager to the project expands EPI's network in its effort to build a "stronger, more reliable, and sovereign payment system in Europe."
