Alstom extends Greater Anglia train maintenance contract for 15 years worth €947 million
Valued at approximately 800 million pounds sterling, or 947 million euros, this contract signed in the United Kingdom will be recorded in Alstom's order book for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026/27. The amount compares to revenue of 19.2 billion euros generated by the group over the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026.
Extension of the services contract through the early 2040s
Alstom signed, on October 15, 2026, a 15-year extension of its railway services contract (Train Services Agreement, or TSA) concluded with British operator Greater Anglia. The agreement covers a fleet of 133 Class 720 Aventra five-car electric multiple units, for which Alstom will continue maintenance at the Seven Kings depot through the early 2040s.
These trains were built at the Derby Litchurch Lane Works site, which the group presents as one of its centers of excellence for rolling stock. The fleet is financed and owned by leasing company Angel Trains.
The contract establishes a long-term framework bringing together Alstom, Greater Anglia and the future Great British Railways (GBR) around performance, reliability and passenger experience. The Greater Anglia network is now part of GBR Anglia.
Scheduled maintenance, major overhauls and approximately 100 jobs
The TSA covers all scheduled maintenance, including major overhauls, as well as unscheduled maintenance, fault repairs, spare parts supply and a reliability improvement programme. It also provides for continued performance improvements aimed at maximizing fleet availability for Greater Anglia's operational needs.
According to Alstom, the agreement supports approximately 100 jobs within the group. Steve Harvey, Director of Services for Alstom in the United Kingdom and Ireland, stated that this contract "reflects the confidence that Greater Anglia places in Alstom".
A fleet ordered in 2016 and fully in service
The Class 720 fleet was ordered in 2016, at the same time as the initial TSA, and its vehicles entered service progressively over a five-year period. All 133 units are now in operation.
According to the press release, the fleet has exceeded 40,000 miles per technical incident over recent periods, a level significantly higher than contractual requirements. In 2024, these trains received a Silver Spanner distinction at the Golden Spanners Awards of the Modern Railways Fourth Friday Club, which rewards the train in its category with the most progress, with a 98.4% improvement over one year.
Alstom also indicates that it has produced 2,660 Aventra cars at its Derby plant since 2015 for several British customers.
