Alstom Secures CAD 4.7 Billion Contract with VIA Rail Canada for 313 Railcars
Alstom has signed an agreement with VIA Rail Canada for the design, engineering, manufacturing and support of a new fleet of long-distance, regional and remote-line railway cars.
The order will be recognized in the second quarter of the group's 2026/27 fiscal year.
313 Adessia Cars and 15-Year Maintenance Agreement
Alstom signed an agreement with VIA Rail Canada on September 3, 2026, for the delivery of 313 Adessia railway cars and a technical support and spare parts supply contract (TSSSA) with a duration of 15 years.
The new fleet will replace VIA Rail Canada's existing long-distance fleet and will serve eight major routes connecting nearly 400 communities across the country, notably between Montreal, Halifax, Gaspé, Jonquière, Senneterre, Toronto, Vancouver, Churchill, Prince Rupert, Jasper, Sudbury and White River.
The Adessia cars will be designed, developed and manufactured in Canada and will replace cars that are 77 years old.
Total Value of CAD 4.7 Billion, Approximately €3 Billion
The overall agreement represents a total value of 4.7 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 3 billion euros).
It is broken down between the delivery of 313 Adessia cars, valued at approximately 4 billion Canadian dollars, and the 15-year technical support and spare parts supply contract, valued at nearly 700 million Canadian dollars.
The order will be recorded in the second quarter of Alstom's 2026/27 fiscal year.
Production Distributed Across Three Sites in Quebec and Ontario
Design and engineering activities will be carried out at Alstom's facility in St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, car body manufacturing at La Pocatière, Quebec, and final assembly at Thunder Bay, Ontario.
According to Alstom, the contract is expected to create or support up to 670 direct jobs within Alstom Canada, as well as indirect and induced jobs in the local supply chain.
The group estimates that the project will add more than 1.6 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 1 billion euros) to the country's gross domestic product.
