Alstom shares rebound following a €3.2 billion contract with VIA Rail Canada
The railway equipment manufacturer's share price advances notably this Friday, in an almost stable SBF 120, driven by the announcement of a major contract in Canada. The order, signed with VIA Rail Canada, represents one of the largest won by the group in recent months and will be incorporated into the accounts for the second quarter of the 2026/27 fiscal year.
A 4.7 billion Canadian dollar contract with VIA Rail supports today's gains
Alstom announced on Thursday, September 3, the signing of an agreement with VIA Rail Canada concerning the design, engineering, manufacturing and technical support of a fleet of 313 railway cars intended for long-distance, regional and remote line services. The total value of the contract reaches 4.7 billion Canadian dollars, equivalent to approximately 3.2 billion euros at current exchange rates. According to the press release, the order will be recognized in the second quarter of fiscal year 2026/27, making it a concrete catalyst for the group's forthcoming financial indicators.
Market reaction is immediate: the share gains 2.04% during the session at €16.51, ranking among the strongest gainers in the SBF 120 within an index that declined slightly (-0.17%). The VIX retreats for its part to 14.16, signaling an overall serene market environment, favorable for positioning on stocks benefiting from their own catalyst.
An improving technical configuration but still constrained by the 200-day moving average
After several difficult weeks (the share has lost 15.21% over one year), Alstom reconnects today with its first two moving averages: the price stands above the 20-day MA at €16.21 (outperformance of +1.82%) and above the 50-day MA at €15.99 (outperformance of +3.22%), two thresholds that now serve as initial technical benchmarks to the upside. Conversely, the 200-day MA at €20.94 remains well above the current price, with a gap exceeding 21%, illustrating the extent of the distance still to be covered to return to the medium-term trend. The RSI at 42 remains below the 50 threshold, reflecting momentum that is not yet clearly bullish despite today's rebound.
On the short positions side, five funds collectively hold 4.56% of shares sold short, a level still elevated, although this figure has declined by 0.75 percentage points over the past thirty days according to available filings: the partial covering movement is real, without however dissipating the selling pressure that structurally weighs on the stock. The resistance at €16.93 represents the next technical level to clear in order to confirm today's momentum.
