Altarea Commerce Wins Tender for Milan Metro Retail Spaces
Altarea Commerce has secured the tender issued by ATM to manage, operate, and market the retail spaces in 83 stations across three lines of the Milan metro system. This network, which sees over 650 million journeys annually, strengthens the group's presence in the urban travel retail sector.
A Major Urban Mobility Network in Europe
The scope entrusted to Altarea Commerce includes lines M1, M2, and M3 of the Milan metro, which together host about 400 shops. The network annually accommodates more than 650 million journeys, making it one of the major mobility hubs in Europe. ATM also manages an extensive multimodal network consisting of 5 metro lines, 135 stations in total, and over 400 shops spread across its infrastructure.
Refurbishment of Nine Stations and Investment Program
The project will include a commercial modernization program and improvements to passenger journeys. Nine iconic stations will undergo refurbishment: Duomo, Cairoli, Lima, San Babila, Cadorna, Porta Venezia, Cordusio, Gioia, and Wagner. Architect Michele De Lucchi, founder of AMDL Circle, will oversee the transformation of several major stations in the network. The retail offering will be structured around local shops, services, dining, food, bookstores-newsstands, health and wellness, crafts, digital solutions, and soft mobility. This programming will cater to the specific needs of urban travel retail: convenience shopping, mobile dining, practical services, and order pickup.
Consolidation of Altarea Commerce's Presence in Italy
Altarea Commerce thus consolidates its position in Italy with a diversified portfolio that includes flow commerce in stations and regional shopping destinations. The group already manages sites in Rome Ostiense, Milan Porta Garibaldi, Padua, Naples Afragola, and Turin Porta Susa. In France, Altarea Commerce continues its development in mobility infrastructures: the Grand Austerlitz district is set to open in fall 2027 with 110 commercial spaces in partnership with SNCF Gares & Connexions, and the group has won with RATP Travel Retail the tender for the 136 shops in the 45 stations of the Grand Paris Express. Altarea Commerce also manages 130 shops at Montparnasse station and 50 at the Gare de l'Est in Paris.
