Bekaert signs preliminary agreement to sell its Sardinian site to Nuova Icom
Belgian group Bekaert has signed a preliminary agreement for the takeover of its tire reinforcement unit located in Macchiareddu, Sardinia, by Italian company Nuova Icom. The transaction, still subject to conditions, includes the transfer of the site's employees.
A preliminary agreement for the sale of the Macchiareddu site
Bekaert announced on September 3, 2026 that it had signed a preliminary agreement with Nuova Icom, a Sardinian company specialized in industrial engineering and metalworking, for the reindustrialization of its tire reinforcement site in Macchiareddu, Sardinia.
The agreement provides for the transfer of the Macchiareddu facility as well as the takeover of Bekaert's employees working at the site, according to the terms and conditions defined in the agreement.
A production activity that has become economically unviable
According to the press release, structural changes that have occurred in recent years in the tire industry have impacted market demand and the competitive position of Bekaert's reinforcement site in Sardinia.
Production activity at the site has gradually declined and the manufacture of steel wire for tires is no longer economically viable under current market conditions. The group indicates that the agreement results from a process in which several options were studied in order to enable a sustainable future for the site and support employment continuity in the region.
Finalization expected in October 2026 subject to conditions
Bekaert indicates its intention to continue ongoing discussions in a constructive and cooperative manner. The transaction is expected to be finalized in October 2026, subject to completion of the consultation procedure and customary conditions precedent.
