ENGIE Surpasses One Gigawatt of Battery Storage Capacity in Europe
ENGIE announces the acquisition of two battery energy storage projects in Spain and the commencement of construction on its first such system in France. These initiatives signify an acceleration in the deployment of energy flexibility, positioned as a key element of the group's strategy.
ENGIE has acquired two Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in Spain with a total capacity of 278 MW. The facilities, located in Andalusia at Álora (78 MW) and Tarifa (200 MW), will be equipped with synchronous compensators for network stabilization. Construction is set to begin in 2027 with a gradual commissioning planned for 2028. In France, the group has started constructing its first BESS project in Castelnau-d'Aude, featuring a capacity of 110 MW over 2 hectares. Scheduled for completion in the summer of 2027, this installation will be capable of storing and delivering up to two hours of electricity.

With these new projects and an existing 700 MW either operational or under construction, ENGIE now exceeds the 1 GW mark of BESS capacities across eight European countries: Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Romania, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The group reaffirms the critical role of flexibility in its strategy and emphasizes that these installations will enhance network stability and facilitate the integration of renewable energies around the clock.
