Engie Targets 100 Studies to Develop Urban Cooling Networks in France
ENGIE announced on July 16, 2026, a partnership program with Villes de France aimed at conducting 100 potential studies to accelerate the deployment of urban cooling networks in France. This initiative focuses on medium-sized cities with populations between 10,000 and 100,000 and could impact up to 5 million residents.
ENGIE and Villes de France are launching a support program to conduct 100 potential studies on urban cooling networks. ENGIE currently operates 26 cooling networks in France, including in Paris, Marseille, Levallois-Perret, and Cannes, positioning itself as the world's leading operator in the sector. France currently has only about fifty cooling networks in total, a level described as modest given the projections: the demand for cooling could reach 34 TWh per year by 2050, compared to less than 20 TWh currently.
Cooling Networks, an Alternative to Individual Air Conditioners
Based on centralized production distributed to multiple buildings, cooling networks help reduce energy consumption, limit the use of refrigerant fluids, and decrease heat emissions into public spaces. These infrastructures particularly target dense urban areas and sensitive buildings (hospitals, nurseries, schools, nursing homes).
