Nexans selected by Red Eléctrica for an electrical link between Majorca and Minorca
The cable manufacturer announced on October 22, 2026 that it has been selected as preferred supplier by Spain's transmission network operator. This selection is not yet a performance contract: it opens a preliminary engineering phase, intended to lead to an EPCI contract.
A submarine and terrestrial 132 kV link in the Balearic Islands
Nexans has been designated by Red Eléctrica, a subsidiary of Redeia responsible for electricity transmission and the operation of electrical systems in Spain, for the "Mallorca-Menorca 3" interconnection project. This concerns a new high-voltage alternating current electrical link (132 kV) between Majorca and Minorca.
As part of this agreement, the group will carry out engineering studies for a complete cable system, integrating submarine and terrestrial infrastructure. The stated objective of the project is to strengthen the security and resilience of the electricity supply to the Balearic Islands.
Six months of engineering before a launch targeted for mid-2027
In accordance with the terms of the call for tenders launched by Red Eléctrica, the implementation of the agreement opens a six-month collaborative engineering phase. This step should prepare for the signing of a future EPCI contract (engineering, procurement, construction and installation).
The launch of the project implementation is scheduled for mid-2027. According to the press release, the project will mobilize Nexans' expertise in engineering, manufacturing and installation.
A link intended to reduce Minorca's dependence on fossil fuels
This interconnection extends Nexans' contribution to the electrical link already in operation between Majorca and Minorca. According to the group, once the new link is delivered, Minorca will be able to reduce its dependence on electricity generation from fossil fuels.
The press release indicates that particular attention will be paid to environmental preservation at all stages of planning and implementation, given the ecological sensitivity of the area.
"The interconnection between Majorca and Minorca represents a significant infrastructure investment, which will help strengthen network resilience and support the energy transition in the Balearic Islands," said Pascal Radue, Executive Vice President in charge of PWR-Transmission activities at Nexans.
