Sanofi launches one of Europe's largest insulin manufacturing plants in Frankfurt
According to the press release published on October 19, 2026, full capacity production of the insulin active ingredient at this new site is scheduled for 2032, once all necessary authorizations have been obtained. The project, announced in August 2024, received European Commission approval in September 2026 for the public support provided by the German federal government, the State of Hesse, and the City of Frankfurt, in accordance with European Union state aid rules.
A 36,000 m² facility integrating automation and artificial intelligence
Sanofi laid the cornerstone on October 19, 2026 for its new insulin production facility at its BioCampus in Frankfurt, one of the group's main integrated research and production sites. The installation will occupy an area of 36,000 square meters, equivalent to approximately five football fields. It will integrate a new generation of insulin production technologies, as well as advanced digital technologies and artificial intelligence in production and quality control processes.
Once operational, this facility will be among the largest in Europe and will constitute an important link in the group's global insulin supply network. The stated objective is to strengthen its ability to reliably and sustainably supply millions of people living with diabetes.
"With this new facility, we are investing in the next generation of insulin production in Europe, building on more than a century of expertise and our strong industrial presence in Frankfurt. Maintaining the conditions necessary for investment and innovation will be essential for Europe's future competitiveness," said Belén Garijo, Chief Executive Officer of Sanofi.
Frankfurt already covers the entire insulin production chain
The Frankfurt BioCampus covers the entire insulin production chain, from active ingredient manufacturing to filling, device assembly, and packaging. Approximately 4,000 employees are dedicated to insulin at the site, and nearly 20 insulin-based products are supplied from the facility.
Each year, Sanofi supplies approximately 15 million people with insulin in more than 100 countries. The group notes that more than 500 million people live with diabetes worldwide today, a number that is expected to exceed 800 million by 2050, as the global insulin supply landscape evolves.
Boris Rhein, Minister-President of the State of Hesse, and Mike Josef, Mayor of Frankfurt, participated in the ceremony alongside Belén Garijo, Brendan O'Callaghan, Executive Vice President Manufacturing & Supply of Sanofi and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Sanofi in Germany, and Madeleine Roach, President of Sanofi in Germany.
