Société Générale stock breaks through support at 71.03 € before bouncing back
After posting the best performance on the CAC 40 the previous day, the Defense bank loses momentum on Thursday, in a Paris index itself oriented downward. Two analyst opinions published today provide divergent signals on the valuation of the security.
A decline that erases part of the previous day's rebound, with the breach of support at 71.03 €
The Société Générale stock falls 1.74% to 70.99 € during the session, in a CAC 40 that declines 0.87%. The security ranks among the strongest declines on the Paris index, after occupying first place in the ranking on Wednesday. During the morning, the price briefly broke through its support at 71.03 €, touched a low of 70.94 €, before returning exactly to contact with the threshold. This breach, even if short-lived, is notable because this level had previously contained declines over several recent sessions.
The technical configuration remains under pressure: the security is trading below its three moving averages, with a gap of 3.23% below the 20-day MA at 73.36 € and 7.75% below the 50-day MA at 76.95 €. The RSI at 41 remains in a neutral zone, without a marked oversold signal. Over one month, the value is down 6.74%, following a peak reached in early August that had taken the security to multi-year highs.
Divergent analyst opinions and solid fundamentals in the background
Two revisions were published on Thursday on the security. Keefe Bruyette & Woods maintains its underperform rating and lowers its target slightly, from 81 € to 80 €, representing an upside potential of nearly 13% compared to the current price but with a directly negative signal. JP Morgan, for its part, sets a neutral opinion with a target raised to 83 €, implying upside potential of around 17% from current levels. These two contrasting analyst opinions come in the wake of the 2029 strategic plan presented on September 21, which had already triggered several upward target revisions.
On the fundamentals side, upon publication of H1 2026 results (July 30, 2026), the bank recorded a record Group net profit of 3.5 billion euros, up 13.9%, with a 2026 ROTE target raised to approximately 11%. Furthermore, the 1.5 billion euro share buyback program announced in August is being executed at approximately 69%. According to the analyst consensus tracked, the security is trading around 9 times expected earnings for the current fiscal year, positioning it in the lower range of typical multiples for the European banking sector. Holding the support at 71.03 € in the coming sessions remains the central technical reference point for short-term momentum.
