UCB Obtains Pharmaceutical Tariff Exemption in the United States
UCB announced on August 31, 2026, that it has concluded an agreement with the United States government concerning access to medicines and investment in research and production on American territory.
In return, the Belgian group will be exempted from certain pharmaceutical tariffs and future tariff obligations.
An Agreement Linking Medicine Access and American Investments
UCB, a biopharmaceutical company listed on Euronext Brussels, stated that it has reached an agreement with the American government designed to support patient access to its medicines, while enabling investments in research, development, and manufacturing of treatments for severe neurological and immunological diseases.
The announcement was made from Brussels (Belgium) and Atlanta (Georgia) on August 31, 2026. The specific terms of the agreement remain confidential.
Exemption from Section 232 Tariffs
Under the terms of this agreement, UCB will not be subject to pharmaceutical tariffs provided for under Section 232 on all of its current products, nor to future pricing obligations.
In parallel, the group will donate Keppra (levetiracetam), recognized as an essential medicine by the FDA, in the form of active pharmaceutical ingredient and tablets, to the national stockpile of the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR).
A Biomedical Manufacturing Facility in Georgia and Expanded American Presence
Earlier this year, UCB had committed to expanding its industrial footprint in the United States, with a new biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Georgia, presented as the largest manufacturing investment in its history. This site is expected to generate approximately 5 billion dollars of economic impact in the United States and create approximately 330 permanent skilled jobs.
UCB has had an American presence for several decades, with its American headquarters, eight offices distributed across six communities, and nearly 2,000 employees. The group states that it has increased its American workforce by more than 70% since 2017 and obtained 15 FDA approvals over the past decade.
