Veolia selected in Barcelona for a 1 billion euro drinking water contract
Barcelona's Metropolitan Council has selected Veolia to manage drinking water services for eight municipalities in its metropolitan area. The group's offer was ranked first on both technical and economic grounds, pending final market award.
A 1 billion euro market over 25 years for 230,000 inhabitants
Veolia announced on September 30, 2026 that it had been designated as the successful bidder for the market by Barcelona's Metropolitan Council. The contract is valued at one billion euros over 25 years and covers the management of essential drinking water services in eight municipalities in the Barcelona metropolitan area (AMB).
This scope represents approximately 230,000 inhabitants. According to the group, the contract consolidates its presence in Spain, a country where it has been established for 160 years.
Ranking of offers pending confirmation
The proposed ranking of offers was announced the previous day by the Barcelona metropolitan area, on the recommendation of the Markets Commission following its plenary session. The group specifies that this step constitutes a standard phase of the procedure and precedes the final award of the service contract.
Veolia indicates that it obtained first place in the technical and economic evaluation.
Network modernization and fleet electrification
Among the planned measures are the deployment of a new leak detection system on the network, the establishment of digitalized operation centers, the modernization of the meter fleet and the installation of remote reading devices, as well as the electrification of the vehicle fleet.
The group indicates that these actions follow the drought episodes experienced by the region in recent years, and that its commitment is to begin work immediately.
