Stock Market: 2.5 Million French People Invested in 2025, a Record Since 2020

Significant Increase in Retail Activity in Stock Markets

In 2025, 1.9 million French individuals made at least one stock purchase or sale, marking a 21% increase compared to 2024's 1.5 million. Over the 2021-2025 period, more than 3.8 million retail investors participated in the stock markets. The AMF recorded 56 million stock transactions by individuals in 2025, up from 41 million in 2024. A growing share of these transactions (26% in 2025 compared to 18% in 2024) was conducted with institutions located in the European Union outside of France, accounting for 15% of the total amounts exchanged.

Strong Momentum for ETFs and Younger Investors

The number of French investors who made at least one ETF transaction increased by 83% in 2025, reaching 1.1 million compared to 607,000 in 2024. Since 2020, this market segment has attracted nearly five times more investors (223,000 in 2020). The AMF recorded 14.4 million ETF transactions in 2025, doubling from 2024's 6 million, with 47% conducted through European institutions outside France.
Meanwhile, the average age of stock investors dropped from 51 years in the last quarter of 2024 to 48 years in the same quarter of 2025, while the average age of ETF investors decreased from 41 to 38 years. Over three years, 1.6 million new investors entered the stock market (780,000 in 2025, 516,000 in 2024, and 329,000 in 2023).
