Lumibird Establishes Presence in Southeast Asia by Acquiring Its Malaysian Distributor
Lumibird, the European leader in laser technologies, has announced the acquisition of its long-standing distribution partner BIZ MEDIC SDN BHD, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This move marks the creation of Lumibird Medical Southeast Asia, a new hub aimed at centralizing the group's activities in the region.
Strategic Acquisition and Regional Focus
Lumibird Medical has finalized an agreement to acquire BIZ MEDIC SDN BHD, its distribution partner since 2004. This acquisition signifies a shift from a distribution model to a direct subsidiary approach, embedding the group in a strategy of strengthened presence in the Asia Pacific region. The establishment of Lumibird Medical Southeast Asia will position this area as the main growth driver for the group in a high-potential ophthalmological market. Southeast Asia is characterized by a strong clinical demand, notably high rates of visual disorders such as myopia, glaucoma, and retinal diseases, as well as a rapid increase in health infrastructure investments.
Operational Restructuring and Brand Presence
The creation of the new hub will be accompanied by the simultaneous closure of the commercial office in Thailand and the subsidiary in India, thereby streamlining the group's regional operations. The new entity will organize the distribution of products from Quantel Medical, Optotek Medical, and Ellex, ensuring a unified brand presence tailored to the regulatory and clinical requirements of Southeast Asia. The completion of the operation is expected in the coming months, subject to obtaining certain local regulatory approvals. Lumibird Medical will continue to explore the potential sale of its medical division, the outcome of which remains uncertain.
