Airbus: AirAsia Orders 150 A220-300s, Program Surpasses 1,000 Orders
On Wednesday, AirAsia signed an order for 150 A220-300 aircraft, the largest order ever recorded for this type of aircraft. This acquisition propels the A220 program beyond the milestone of over 1,000 cumulative firm orders.
An Order of 150 A220s for the Malaysian Airline
AirAsia has placed an order for 150 latest generation A220-300 aircraft. The agreement was announced during a ceremony held at the Airbus site in Mirabel, Canada, in the presence of Tan Sri Tony Fernandes (CEO of Capital A and advisor to AirAsia Group) and Lars Wagner (CEO of Commercial Aircraft at Airbus).
This deal marks AirAsia as a new customer for the A220. The airline will operate the aircraft on routes across ASEAN and Central Asia, allowing larger capacity aircraft to focus on long-haul routes.
AirAsia also becomes the launch customer for the new cabin configuration of the A220, capable of accommodating 160 passengers (ten additional seats), made possible by the addition of an extra emergency exit above each wing.
Features of the A220 and Scope of the Program
The A220 combines the longest range, lowest fuel consumption, and most spacious cabin in its class. This aircraft can carry between 100 and 160 passengers over distances up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km).
As of the end of March 2026, 501 A220s had been delivered to 25 operators worldwide. AirAsia's order brings the total number of aircraft ordered in the program to over 1,000.
Like all Airbus aircraft, the A220 can operate with up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Airbus aims for the capability to operate with 100% SAF across its entire fleet by 2030.
