Alstom Lands a Mega-Contract of 1.03 Billion Euros in Portugal
Alstom has secured a contract worth 1.03 billion euros with Comboios de Portugal (CP) for the supply of 153 Adessia Stream trains. This deal marks the largest train acquisition in the history of Portugal and is part of the Portuguese railway fleet renewal program.
Contract Details
The contract involves the supply of 153 Adessia Stream trains to Comboios de Portugal. The base contract was signed in October 2025 for 117 Adessia Stream trains, and was later expanded to include an additional 36 trains, which accelerated the delivery schedule. The first trains are expected to enter service in 2029. A new fleet of 98 commuter trains will bolster suburban connections in the Lisbon, Porto, and Cascais areas, while the remaining 55 trains will enhance services on regional lines.
Manufacturing Plant and Job Creation
As part of this contract, Alstom will establish a new train manufacturing plant in Matosinhos, in the Porto region. The facility will cover more than 20,000 square meters and will be equipped with modern production technologies. The construction of the site will be carried out in partnership with the Portuguese public works company DST. The project will create nearly 300 direct jobs in Portugal, particularly in engineering, technical, and specialized trades. 15% of the positions will be reserved for young unemployed individuals, long-term unemployed, and people with health issues or disabilities.
Train Features
The new three-car trains can accommodate up to 450 passengers each. Specially designed for the Portuguese market, these trains are equipped with step-free access, a flat floor throughout, Wi-Fi, and designated spaces for wheelchairs and bicycles. Developed in accordance with eco-design principles, the new trains have a recyclability rate of over 95%.
