Alstom Secures Order for 26 Additional Trains in Baden-Württemberg
The French railway manufacturer has signed a contract with the state of Baden-Württemberg for the supply of 26 additional Coradia Max double-decker trains, according to the company's press release. The agreement also includes a maintenance contract until the end of 2055, with a total value of approximately 500 million euros.
Continuation of a Previous Agreement
This order is part of an initial contract signed in May 2022, the company indicates. The agreement initially covered the delivery of 130 Coradia Max trains to the state of Baden-Württemberg, along with FlexCare Perform maintenance and servicing. The contract included an option for up to 100 additional trains. With this new order of 26 sets, the total number of trains ordered by the German region now stands at 156 units. The delivery of the additional trains is scheduled between mid and late 2028, according to the company. The entire program represents an investment of approximately 3 billion euros for the state of Baden-Württemberg, as reported in the press release. This order was recorded in the third quarter of the 2025-2026 fiscal year of Alstom and is part of three contracts announced on January 5, 2026, totaling approximately 2.5 billion euros.
High-Speed Regional Transport
The Coradia Max trains destined for Baden-Württemberg have a maximum speed of 200 kilometers per hour, making them the fastest trains in German regional transport, according to the company. Each train consists of four cars, including two double-decker end cars and two single-level intermediate cars, totaling 106 meters in length. The seating capacity reaches 380 seats per train, the company states. The trains can operate in multiple units to increase capacity as needed. They will gradually enter service from December 2026 on various lines of the rail network 35, also known as the Stuttgart-Bodensee-Netz. They will be operated by DB Regio Baden-Württemberg and Arverio on Regionalexpress and Metropolexpress lines. The deployment of this new fleet is particularly aimed at accompanying the commissioning of the Stuttgart 21 railway hub.
Advanced Features and Accessibility
The trains are equipped with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi connection, charging outlets for phones and laptops, as well as individual reading lights, according to the press release. The interior includes lounges, conference compartments, family areas, and versatile compartments for bulky luggage, strollers, and bicycles. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility has been integrated into the design, with door thresholds allowing level access from standard platforms at a height of 760 millimeters and wheelchair lifts. The trains also feature modern signaling and automation technology as part of the Digitaler Knoten Stuttgart project, Germany's first digitized railway hub, the company states. The Coradia Max platform totals more than 500 trains ordered in Europe. Alstom assures that it will maintain over 36,000 vehicles globally and positions itself as a long-term maintenance partner for this fleet.
