Arkema Partners with Semcorp to Innovate in Battery Separators
Arkema and Semcorp have signed a memorandum of understanding to accelerate innovation in lithium-ion battery separator technologies, according to an Arkema press release.
Arkema's Financial Overview
Arkema achieved a turnover of approximately 9.5 billion euros in 2024. The company operates in about 55 countries with 21,150 employees. Specializing in specialty materials, Arkema sees 92% of its revenue coming from its three main segments: Adhesives, Advanced Materials, and Coating Solutions, with a well-positioned Intermediates segment as well. These figures demonstrate Arkema's strong market position in advanced materials.
Strategic Partnership with Semcorp
Arkema has entered into a strategic partnership with Semcorp, a manufacturer of separators for lithium-ion batteries, to support Semcorp's international development. Arkema will provide solutions and technical support to assist in the deployment of Semcorp's separators in key markets such as electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The memorandum includes joint developments on next-generation separators, enhancing performance and safety through the combined expertise of both companies.
Significance of the Arkema-Semcorp Agreement
The agreement between Arkema and Semcorp comes amid growing demand for safer and more efficient lithium-ion batteries, which are essential for the transition to renewable energies. Battery separators play a crucial role in preventing short circuits and facilitating ionic transfers, thus contributing to the safety and efficiency of batteries. Thierry Le Hénaff, CEO of Arkema, emphasizes the importance of this partnership in maintaining a leadership position in a rapidly evolving sector.
