Carbios Plans Collaboration with Wankai to Develop PET Recycling
Carbios has announced a preliminary agreement with Wankai New Materials to develop PET recycling technology in Asia.
Initial Agreement Signed
According to the press release, Carbios and Wankai New Materials have signed an agreement on fundamental principles to deploy Carbios' enzymatic PET recycling technology in Asia. The goal is to achieve a long-term recycling capacity of 1 million tonnes. The first step in this collaboration will be the construction of a plant in China, with an annual processing capacity of 50,000 tonnes of PET waste. This plant is expected to begin construction in the first quarter of 2026 and will be financed by Wankai, who will be the majority shareholder.
Strategic Investment Planned
In parallel with this industrial collaboration, Wankai plans to invest 5 million euros in Carbios' capital. This investment, still subject to the signing of definitive agreements, aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two companies. It should be noted that this agreement includes a first license of Carbios' technology for the Asian region, marking a significant step towards the economic viability of Carbios' model.
China: A Key Market for Carbios
China, the world's leading producer of PET, represents a key market for Carbios, which aims to accelerate the development of a circular PET industry in Asia. According to Carbios, this strategic agreement with Wankai could contribute to a transition towards a more circular and low-carbon PET industry. However, the project remains contingent upon the finalization of definitive agreements before the end of the year, including the shareholders' agreement and the licensing contract.
