Crédit Agricole Shares Jump 4% Despite Analyst Downgrade
Crédit Agricole's stock is among the top performers on the CAC 40 this Wednesday, in a sharply rising Paris market. This surge comes as Autonomous Research has just downgraded its recommendation on the stock, less than a month before the publication of the first quarter results.
Significant Rise Amid Market Volatility
Crédit Agricole's stock has risen by 3.99% to 16.565 euros during the session, after closing at 15.93 euros the previous day. This movement is part of a broader upward trend: the CAC 40 is up 2.08% during the session, while the SBF 120 has gained 2.10%. The French banking sector is fully participating in this improvement, with BNP Paribas up by 5.10% and AXA by 2.65%. However, this rebound occurs in an environment of high nervousness. The VIX, a volatility indicator on the American markets, was at 31.05 points in its last measurement, a level considered as a signal of extreme stress. Geopolitically, the surge in Brent crude to over 115 dollars at the beginning of the week, linked to military escalation in the Middle East, continues to weigh on expectations. In this context, the day's rise in banking values appears to be a catch-up after several sessions of decline: over three months, Crédit Agricole's stock is still down by 5.61%.
Analyst Downgrade the Day Before
The day before, Autonomous Research downgraded its recommendation on the stock from 'neutral' to 'underperform', while also lowering its price target from 20.50 to 19.80 euros. Despite this downgrade, this target still suggests a potential upside of about 19% from the current price, which puts the negative signal sent by the research firm into perspective. From a technical standpoint, the stock is trading above its identified support at 15.85 euros and has just crossed its 200-day moving average at 16.74 euros, a closely watched threshold. The RSI, at 36, remains in a low zone, indicating that selling pressure is still present in recent weeks. The 50-day moving average, set at 17.46 euros, now represents the next intermediate resistance to overcome to confirm a possible trend reversal. The next major event is scheduled for April 30 with the publication of the first quarter 2026 results, followed by the annual general meeting on May 20.
