EssilorLuxottica Partners with Applied Materials for Smart Glasses and Augmented Reality
EssilorLuxottica and Applied Materials announced on Tuesday a joint development agreement aimed at accelerating the commercialization of next-generation smart optical systems for smart glasses and augmented reality. The partnership combines the expertise of the Franco-Italian giant in lenses and frames with that of Applied Materials in materials engineering and waveguide technologies.
A Multi-Year Agreement to Develop Augmented Reality Optics
EssilorLuxottica and Applied Materials have entered into a long-term development agreement designed to accelerate the commercialization of smart optical systems for augmented reality and AI-compatible smart glasses. The collaboration brings together EssilorLuxottica's global leadership in lenses, frames, and smart glasses with Applied Materials' expertise in materials engineering and waveguide technologies, to develop scalable optical platforms capable of delivering lightweight, high-performance visual experiences. The two groups will collaborate on the research and development of advanced optical technologies, including waveguides, adaptive lens systems, and materials innovations. These technologies aim to enable future smart lenses and augmented reality experiences.
A Dedicated Collaboration Lab in California
Joint research initiatives will be conducted in a dedicated collaboration laboratory located on the Silicon Valley campus of Applied Materials. This space will allow both companies to bring together their complementary skills and respective patents to accelerate the transition from disruptive innovations to manufacturable and scalable optical solutions. Francesco Milleri, CEO of EssilorLuxottica, emphasizes that 'the convergence of advanced optics, AI, and wearable technologies will unlock a new generation of experiences for consumers.' Gary Dickerson, CEO of Applied Materials, adds that 'designing, building, and scaling next-generation smart glasses requires deep collaboration within the technology ecosystem.'
Exploring Additional Strategic Opportunities
Applied Materials and EssilorLuxottica are also planning to jointly explore additional strategic opportunities to further develop and commercialize the technologies created through this collaboration.
