Nokia and Ericsson Enhance Cooperation on Network Automation
Nokia and Ericsson announce a collaboration aimed at accelerating intelligent automation across RAN and Open RAN networks. The two telecom equipment manufacturers are establishing a mutual interoperability relationship by joining their respective automation application ecosystems.
Formalizing a Strategic Collaboration
Nokia and Ericsson have formalized a cooperation agreement focused on advancing intelligent automation in networks. Under the terms of this collaboration, Ericsson becomes a member of the Nokia SMO Marketplace, a platform designed to enable communication service providers and partners to build, integrate, and deploy automation applications in an open, multi-vendor ecosystem. In return, Nokia joins the Ericsson rApp Ecosystem, an established ecosystem that brings together providers, equipment manufacturers, and independent developers around the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform, dedicated to the management and automation of open, multi-vendor, and multi-technology networks.
Focusing on R1 Interface Innovation
The collaboration particularly focuses on innovation centered around the R1 interface, through which rApps interact with the SMO. In this context, Nokia and Ericsson commit to making rApps available to communication service providers on both platforms, thereby strengthening interoperability among multi-vendor environments. This approach aims to facilitate the cross-adoption of automation tools and accelerate the development of robust rApp environments.
Reflecting Industry Convergence Towards SMO Architecture
The collaboration reflects the telecom industry's convergence towards the SMO as a long-term automation architecture. Both equipment manufacturers emphasize that this cooperation represents a shared confidence in the SMO architecture and a joint commitment to progressing towards industry-wide interoperability through standardized R1 interfaces. According to statements from the leaders, Nokia and Ericsson believe that this alliance offers providers greater flexibility in implementing their transformation strategies towards Autonomous Networks.
