Renault stock last in the CAC 40, weighed down by August sales
The diamond-branded manufacturer's stock is experiencing the steepest decline in the Paris index this Tuesday, in a market itself oriented downwards. Pressure is mounting as commercial data from August has just confirmed a decline in the group's sales on the French market.
The CAC 40's worst performer, penalized by a disappointing August in the automotive market
Renault is down 3.36% to €28.72 during the session, compared to a 0.41% decline for the CAC 40: it is the steepest drop in the index at mid-day. The commercial context of the day is directly weighing on sentiment. According to PFA data published this morning, the group posted a decline in its vehicle registrations in France in August, while the light vehicle market advanced 3.6% to 110,132 units.
This commercial underperformance contrasts with the positive momentum observed in July, when Renault had advanced 4.41%. Furthermore, the group announced today the extension of energy savings certificates to used electric vehicles from the Renault and Dacia brands, a commercial measure with no immediate impact on volumes. When publishing Q1 2026 results (April 27, 2026), the group had highlighted an acceleration in electric vehicles among its growth drivers; August's disappointment partially tempers this outlook.
A technical configuration that holds up, but bearish positions still present
Despite today's decline, the stock is maintaining some positive reference points on the moving averages. It remains above its 20-day MA at €28.49 (spread of +0.81%) and its 50-day MA at €27.21, two levels that had supported the rebound observed last Friday. Resistance at €29.72 (previous session's closing level) now constitutes the immediate ceiling to overcome. Conversely, the 200-day MA at €30.27 remains well above the price, by more than 5%, which reflects an underlying unfavorable trend over the year (the stock is down 14.52% over twelve months). The RSI at 63 is in neutral to slightly tense territory, without a clear overbought signal.
Regarding bearish positions, five funds collectively hold 5.61% of the capital sold short according to available disclosures, down 1.59 points over thirty days (versus 7.20% a month ago). This level remains high and testifies to persistent institutional bearish positioning, although the unwinding trend has begun. At a valuation of approximately 4.4 times expected earnings according to the analyst consensus reviewed, the stock remains undervalued compared to its peers, which has not been enough to halt the selling pressure of the session. Support at €25.88 constitutes the next identified lower reference on the chart.
