Saint-Gobain stock plunges nearly 4% and breaks through its support level
Saint-Gobain is declining during the session and settling at the bottom of the CAC 40, in a Paris market itself oriented downward. The decline amplifies a bearish trend that has now stretched over several weeks, in a context of weak European construction.
Saint-Gobain loses 3.82% during the session, at €71.56, to settle as the worst performer in the CAC 40, which itself is down 1.83%. The monthly decline now exceeds 16%, representing one of the most severe sequences among the large values in the Paris index. Over one year, the decline reaches 23%.
Pressure has accelerated since the end of August, widening a marked gap between the price and the three reference moving averages: the stock is trading respectively at approximately 10.5% below its 20-day MA (€79.94) and below its 200-day MA (€79.91), and more than 9% below its 50-day MA (€78.83). This positioning below all moving average benchmarks reflects an established selling dynamic, which today's session amplifies. The RSI at 34 approaches the oversold zone without reaching it, while the MACD remains in negative territory, a signal consistent with the continuation of the decline.
Construction sector under pressure and resistance distant at €85.54
The fundamental context offers little support in the short term. Building economic data from August 2026 point to a deteriorated construction climate in France (index at -18.2) as well as in the eurozone (-6.7), with housing permits down 8% over twelve months and French building production declining 4.8% year-on-year. Saint-Gobain, directly exposed to the construction cycle, is evolving in an environment of sluggish demand.
Furthermore, the rise in long-term interest rates in Europe (the 10-year Bund touched a fifteen-year high around 3.40%) mechanically increases the cost of capital and weighs on valuations of industrial stocks sensitive to the building cycle. The previous support level at €74.40 has been broken through, which opens the way toward lower levels, while resistance is situated at €85.54, representing a gap of nearly 20% from the current price. The next reading of the group's results, whose half-year revenue was stable at €23.6 billion with an EBITDA margin in decline at 15.4% according to available data, will remain a central benchmark for tracking the stock's evolution.
