Sapmer transfers its three French tuna vessels to CFTO and refocuses on the TAAF
Reunionese shipowner Sapmer has transferred ownership of its three tuna vessels under French flag to the Compagnie Française du Thon Océanique. This transfer refocuses the group on its fishing operations in the French Southern and Antarctic Territories.
Three tuna vessels taken over by P&P Thon subsidiary
Sapmer announced on September 9, 2026 the transfer of its three tuna vessels under French flag, the Franche Terre, the Bernica and the Dolomieu, to the Compagnie Française du Thon Océanique (CFTO), a subsidiary of P&P Thon.
The final agreements were signed on August 14, 2026 and the delivery of the vessels took place on September 9, 2026. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Maintenance of fishing seniority rights and transfer of employment contracts
In addition to the takeover of the vessels, the transaction provides for the maintenance of the benefit of fishing seniority rights linked to the operation of these units, in accordance with the provisions of the Rural and Maritime Fishing Code, as well as the transfer of employment contracts for crew members.
According to the company, the transaction aims to ensure the continuity of French tuna fishing and to preserve the expertise and jobs associated with crew operations. It received a favorable opinion from workers' representative bodies following consultations conducted in compliance with applicable procedures.
Refocus on toothfish and crayfish in the TAAF
Sapmer is now refocusing on its southern fishing operations in the French Southern and Antarctic Territories (TAAF), particularly toothfish fishing (Kerguelen and Crozet) and crayfish fishing (Saint-Paul and Amsterdam).
"This transaction represents a structuring step for the company's development. Sapmer is continuing the implementation of its strategy focused on toothfish and crayfish fishing in the TAAF," said Adrien de Chomereau, Chief Executive Officer of Sapmer. Founded in 1947, the Reunionese shipowner is listed on Euronext Growth and its southern fisheries are MSC certified.
