TomTom Integrates Car Navigation with Amazon's Alexa Assistant
Dutch mapping and location technology specialist TomTom has announced a collaboration with Amazon to integrate its car navigation application with the customizable voice assistant, Alexa Custom Assistant. This partnership aims to provide automotive manufacturers with an AI-powered conversational navigation experience.
Integration Details
The integration is based on the Alexa Custom Assistant, a service that allows automotive manufacturers to customize their own intelligent assistants. This solution leverages the Alexa+ architecture, which enables the assistant to understand complex, multi-step queries and orchestrate actions within the TomTom navigation application. According to the company, this technological advancement allows drivers to use natural language to perform sophisticated waypoint manipulations, such as adding, deleting, or rearranging stops in a single request. Drivers can now search for places and addresses along their route or obtain information about upcoming electric vehicle charging stations, illustrating contextual integration with the vehicle's systems.
Immediate Availability and Objectives
According to the press release, this implementation is immediately available for automotive manufacturers who wish to integrate sophisticated voice-controlled navigation into their vehicles. TomTom's stated goal is to reduce driver distraction while enhancing the overall driving experience. Manuela Locarno Ajayi, Vice President of Product Engineering at TomTom, stated that this collaboration merges the group's mapping and routing capabilities with the advanced features of the Alexa Custom Assistant. Anes Hodži?, Vice President of Amazon Smart Vehicles, mentioned that this collaboration enables bringing the Alexa Custom Assistant technology to more automotive manufacturers seeking intuitive and conversational navigation experiences for their customers.
Technology Showcase at CES 2026
This new technological integration is being showcased at the CES 2026 in Las Vegas, where TomTom has a booth in the West Hall. The company is offering live demonstrations of this agent-based navigation experience to professional visitors and interested automotive manufacturers. This announcement is part of TomTom's strategy to provide location data and technologies to drivers, automotive manufacturers, businesses, and developers. The Dutch group, listed on Euronext Amsterdam under the symbol TOM2, markets ready-to-use maps, routing solutions, real-time traffic information, as well as APIs and software development kits.
