Vallourec: Climate Plan Certified by GSCC, 2030 Goal Achieved by 2025
Vallourec has announced the certification of its climate transition plan by the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC), which recognizes the alignment of its emission trajectory with the international benchmark standard for steel decarbonization. This certification validates the group's positioning in addressing the challenges of the energy transition in the steel sector.
An International Certification Aligned with Paris Goals
Vallourec's decarbonization plan has been certified by the GSCC following an independent evaluation conducted by CARES, an agency accredited by the climate council. The group's average carbon intensity, measured at 1.70 tCO₂e per ton of rolled steel in 2021, has already been reduced to 1.16 tCO₂e per ton in 2025. This trajectory is below the GSCC standard threshold of 1.20 tCO₂e per ton set for 2030, achieved ahead of schedule. Vallourec thus joins eight certified members of the GSCC, as the first producer to operate both integrated blast furnaces and electric arc furnaces (EAF). The group remains the only council member to combine these two production technologies.
Additional Commitments Beyond the Standard
In addition to its commitment to rolled steel, Vallourec aims to reduce the carbon footprint of its finished tubes by 30% by 2030 compared to 2021, as well as a 25% reduction in its Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions over the same timeframe. The group relies on the operational excellence of its industrial sites, the adoption of low-carbon production technologies, the development of circularity, and innovation to implement its trajectory. This decarbonization is part of a climate strategy pursued for over two decades, with the group achieving its emission reduction commitments three years early in 2025, set under its previous roadmap.
