Clermont-based greentech company Afyren announced on October 1, 2026 that one of its clients, South African company Esse Skincare, is now marketing a cosmetic product formulated with its 100% bio-based propionic acid.
This market launch illustrates a concrete outlet for an ingredient produced by fermentation in its Afyren Neoxy biorefinery.
A care product resulting from a partnership with Esse Skincare
Afyren indicated that it enables the launch of Esse Barrier Rescue, presented as the world's first care product formulated with natural propionic acid. This launch occurs several months after the conclusion of a partnership with Esse Skincare, specialized in skincare science based on the microbiome.
It is a moisturizing cream combining propionic acid and ceramides, intended for dry and reactive skin. The product is now available worldwide for skincare professionals and consumers.

Propionic acid is a short-chain fatty acid present in nature. Until now, it was mainly available at industrial scale from petrochemical sources.
Thanks to this partnership, Esse has access to bio-based propionic acid, certified COSMOS, manufactured within Afyren Neoxy, the company's industrial biorefinery located in the Grand Est region. This facility is based on a circular fermentation process with low carbon footprint.
An outlet for the cosmetics sector
Joachim Merziger, Director of Operations at Afyren, stated that this partnership demonstrates how industrial biotechnology can open new perspectives in terms of performance and sustainable development in the cosmetics sector.
This outlet is added to the group's recent activity, which had signed on September 29, 2026 a multi-year fertilizer supply contract with Terrial, a subsidiary of the Avril group.
