Air Liquide Achieves First Industrial-Scale Ammonia Cracking
Air Liquide has announced the commissioning of the world's first pilot unit capable of converting ammonia into hydrogen at an industrial scale, with a capacity of 30 tons per day, located at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges (Belgium). This technology aims to address one of the main challenges in the global development of hydrogen: long-distance transport.
Ammonia, already produced and transported on a large scale worldwide, serves as an effective and low-cost hydrogen carrier, especially when manufactured in regions with abundant renewable energies. With this unit, Air Liquide demonstrates the feasibility of 'cracking' ammonia on a large scale to regenerate low-carbon or renewable hydrogen for industry and mobility.
The pilot installation incorporates several patented innovations, including in process safety, advanced catalysis, combustion, and molecular separation. It marks a new milestone in the group's ability to industrialize technologies derived from research.
