FDMA's First H160 Acquisition

Announced on September 3, 2026, the operation corresponds to an order signed by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA), placed under the authority of the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. This marks the agency's first acquisition of this helicopter.

Based in Kumamoto Prefecture, in the Kyushu region, the aircraft will join the FDMA's existing fleet. Its primary mission will focus on rapid aerial reconnaissance and real-time visual intelligence collection during major natural disasters, including a large-scale earthquake scenario linked to the Nankai fault.

The aircraft will be equipped with Helisat satellite technology, which transmits high-definition data to orbiting satellites, enabling it to bypass damaged terrestrial infrastructure. Airbus is also developing a specific landing gear for operations on deep snow, adapted to Japanese winter conditions.

The deployment to Kumamoto follows the continuation of Airbus aircraft operations by the prefecture, which introduced the AS365N3 in 2001 for disaster management missions, before transitioning to the AS365N3+ in 2018. The new H160 will operate alongside the AS365N3+ already in service.

Four H160s Already in Service in Japan

According to Airbus, four H160 helicopters are already in service in Japan, where they perform law enforcement missions, information gathering for the media, and municipal firefighting operations. The group is leveraging its H160 dedicated center located in Kobe to support this fleet.

The H160 is equipped with the Helionix avionics suite and can perform various missions, from law enforcement to offshore transport, including search and rescue and medical evacuations. The aircraft has entered service in several countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
