ArcelorMittal share price climbs despite 1 billion dollar impairment in Ukraine
The steelmaker is taking a major accounting shock on Friday on its Ukrainian site in Kryvyi Rih, while displaying one of the best performances of the CAC 40 in mid-morning trading. The technical rebound is supported by solid quarterly fundamentals, in a Paris market oriented slightly upwards.
A one billion dollar impairment charge on the Ukrainian Kryvyi Rih plant
ArcelorMittal confirmed this morning that it was unable to safely resume operations at its Kryvyi Rih subsidiary, following a series of missile strikes. The group informed the Ukrainian government of this situation and plans to record an impairment charge of approximately one billion dollars on this asset. This is not the first attack on this site: in September, a ballistic strike had already claimed the lives of two subcontractors.
The decision not to restart the plant contrasts with the group's operational trajectory, which is displaying, upon publication of the first half 2026 results on July 30, 2026, positive prospects for the short, medium and long term with structurally higher profits. This non-recurring charge does not call into question the group's overall asset base, but it illustrates the rising cost of the Ukrainian conflict on the steelmaker's European production capacities.
The share price gains ground and remains well above its 50-day moving average, despite the 20-day moving average holding firm
In trading, the share gains 1.87% to €63.16, ranking among the strongest gains in the CAC 40 as the index advances 0.32%. The advance comes from a level slightly below the 20-day moving average at €64.46 (gap of -2.02%), signaling that short-term resistance remains intact. Conversely, the share price is comfortably above the 50-day moving average at €62.60 (+0.89%) and stands at nearly 19% above the 200-day moving average at €53.13, testifying to a still-favorable underlying momentum.
The RSI at 44 remains neutral, with no overbought signal or marked bullish exhaustion. Over three months, the share shows a gain of 16.49%, after posting a five-year peak in early September around €68. The support level at €61.16 constitutes the closest floor to monitor in the event of renewed selling pressure, while resistance at €67.54 represents the next target to overcome to return to recent highs.
