Avantium: Final Unit Commissioned at Delfzijl FDCA Plant
Dutch group Avantium has reached a milestone in the startup of its commercial FDCA plant in Delfzijl, with the completion of the purification unit commissioning.
The announcement, published on September 7, 2026, indicates that all major process units are now commissioned.
All Process Units Now Commissioned
Avantium has announced the completion of commissioning of the purification unit at its Delfzijl FDCA plant, presented by the company as the first commercial-scale plant for FDCA production (furanedicarboxylic acid).
This milestone follows the startup of utility systems and the sugar dehydration unit, as well as the commissioning of the oxidation unit, previously announced.
According to the group, the commissioning of all major process units represents a step towards the full startup of the plant. Avantium continues integrated startup activities and is preparing for first FDCA production.
Priorities Set for End of 2026
For the remainder of 2026, Avantium states it is focusing its efforts on the full startup of the plant, production of the first batches of FDCA, completion of qualification activities and preparation of commercial sales under existing offtake agreements.
These sales are expected for the end of 2026, subject to successful startup and product qualification. The company anticipates a ramp-up towards full design capacity over a period of approximately 24 months following startup.
Hero de Jager, interim Chief Operating Officer of Avantium, stated that the priority is shifting towards the production of the first batches of FDCA and the launch of commercial deliveries under existing offtake agreements.
