Avantium signs agreement with Klöckner Pentaplast for its plant-based PEF plastic
Avantium has concluded a capacity reservation agreement with packaging specialist Klöckner Pentaplast (KP Films), covering its plant-based polymer PEF intended for thermoformed food packaging applications.
The announcement, published on September 14, 2026 in Amsterdam, extends a series of agreements concluded by the Dutch group around its plant-based materials.
An agreement focused on PEF for thermoformed food packaging
Avantium, a Dutch company specializing in renewable and circular polymers, announced on September 14, 2026 the signing of a capacity reservation agreement with Klöckner Pentaplast (KP Films), a company active in rigid and flexible packaging and technical films.
The agreement supports the ambition of both companies to explore the use of Avantium's plant-based polymer PEF (polyethylene furanoate), marketed under the Releaf brand, in thermoformed food packaging applications, including food trays and other packaging designed to protect fresh and prepared foods.
Access to future volumes from facilities operated under license
With a view to the next development phase, KP Films signed a capacity reservation agreement supporting access to future volumes of Releaf, sourced from industrial-scale facilities that would be built and operated by licensees using Avantium's technology.
The agreement opens a possible path toward future commercial deployment of Releaf in thermoformed food packaging applications in Europe. It also facilitates ongoing evaluation activities and potential access to volumes, provided that the material meets technical, regulatory and commercial requirements.
A step in Avantium's licensing strategy
According to Marco Jansen, Commercial Director at Avantium, this agreement illustrates the growing market interest in PEF and supports the group's strategy to establish industrial PEF production through the granting of technology licenses.
Samuel Pardo, Senior Innovations Manager at Klöckner Pentaplast, indicated that the company plans to continue evaluating the performance, processability and suitability of the material as part of its innovation program.
This agreement comes after the announcement of a commercial agreement with Japan's Sojitz Pla-Net on September 9, 2026, and the completion of the commissioning of the latest unit of its commercial FDCA facility in Delfzijl on September 7, 2026.
