Biosynex: Its Chembio Subsidiary Funded by BARDA for Rapid Plague Test
Biosynex announced on October 23, 2026 that its American subsidiary Chembio Diagnostic Systems has secured funding for a rapid test capable of detecting three pathogens considered biological threats. The 20-month program is supported by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and administered by Advanced Technology International, under the Rapid Response Partnership Vehicle (RRPV).
A Rapid Multiplex Test Against Plague, Tularemia and Melioidosis
Chembio, 100% owned by Biosynex, must advance the development of the DPP Biothreat Panel. This is a rapid multiplex in vitro diagnostic test, usable at the point of care, designed to detect Yersinia pestis (responsible for plague), Francisella tularensis (tularemia) and Burkholderia pseudomallei (melioidosis).
The subsidiary will leverage its "Dual Path Platform" (DPP) technology platform to develop this test and obtain FDA authorization. The system will also include the DPP Micro Reader, a portable reader that provides objective results and records test data.
According to the press release, the rapid identification of these agents is essential for clinical management and public health response, particularly in resource-limited settings or in the field. The DPP platform also allows, according to the company, for envisioning future expansion of the panel to other targets, depending on public health and biodefense priorities.
A Product Still in Development, Not Authorized by the FDA
The DPP Biothreat Panel is under development: it has not yet been authorized or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is not available for commercial purposes. The program extends Chembio's previous work supported by BARDA, focusing on the Zika virus and COVID-19.
The project is funded in whole or in part by federal funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) and BARDA, under contract number 75A50123D00005. "This program will leverage our experience in rapid multiplex diagnostics to detect pathogens representing a major threat to public health and biodefense," said Javan Esfandiari, President and Chief Scientific and Technology Officer of Chembio.
This announcement comes just days after the October 12, 2026 judgment that ended the safeguard procedure opened for Biosynex on September 29, 2025. The group, listed on Euronext Growth Paris, achieved revenue of €95 million in 2025.
