Boeing Secures $75M US Air Force Contract for JDAM LR Munition
The US Air Force has awarded Boeing a $75M contract for initial production of a long-range precision munition. This order follows an internal investment by the group of nearly $100M in the program.
A $75M Contract for Initial Production of JDAM LR
On August 5, 2026, Boeing announced that it had been awarded an "Undefinitized Contract Action" (UCA) valued at $75M by the US Air Force from its Saint-Charles (Missouri) facility. The contract covers the acquisition of the BSU-111/B Payload Delivery Unit (PDU) guided munition Joint Direct Attack Munition Long Range (JDAM LR).
This precision munition can travel more than 300 nautical miles with a 500-pound class payload (226 kilograms). The contract paves the way for initial production of PDUs intended for the US Navy.
A Program Backed by Nearly $100M in Internal Investment
The UCA follows an internal Boeing investment of nearly $100M in the program. The JDAM LR combines the rear guidance kit of the JDAM and the existing aircraft interface with a wing kit and a compact turbofan engine to provide long-range conventional strike capability against land targets, naval targets and for maritime mining missions.
By leveraging existing JDAM infrastructure, the system enables high-volume production and integration on any aircraft capable of carrying a conventional JDAM.
First Successful Flight Test off California Coast
According to Boeing, the system recently completed its first flight test off the California coast. This test met its objectives of powered flight on a predefined profile and the use of military code GPS navigation while maintaining guidance to the target.
Bob Ciesla, Vice President of Boeing Precision Engagement Systems, described this contract as a "first step to production" and a "major milestone" for the JDAM LR program.
