EDP Completes 92 MW Battery Storage System in California
The Portuguese group is continuing the rollout of its energy storage portfolio in the United States. Through its North American subsidiary, it has just completed a new battery system connected to a California solar site.
This achievement is part of continuous development of renewable storage capacity in the American market.
A Battery System Connected to the Sandrini Solar Site
EDP announced, through its subsidiary EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA) and in partnership with Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA), the completion of the Sandrini Energy Storage project, a 92 MW / 368 MWh battery storage system located in the United States. According to the group, the installation has a capacity equivalent to powering more than 22,000 homes in California.
The system is co-located with the 300 MW Sandrini solar site, of which RCEA purchases 100 MW. The project is associated with an energy storage service contract with RCEA covering 100% of the battery capacity.
According to EDP, the installation aims to strengthen grid reliability, support California's clean energy objectives, and deliver renewable electricity during periods of high demand.
Local Benefits and California Positioning
According to EDP, the Sandrini Energy Storage project should generate more than 4 million euros in revenue for local utilities and infrastructure, including schools, roads, emergency services, and parks. Approximately 50 jobs were mobilized during its construction.
In total, the entire Sandrini Solar and Energy Storage complex mobilized approximately 250 jobs during the construction phase and should generate more than 21 million euros in local tax revenues.
The group indicates it has gross operational capacity in California of approximately 1,230 MW distributed among wind, solar, and storage, with a capacity equivalent to powering more than 485,000 homes. In June 2026, EDPR NA inaugurated Flatland Energy Storage, a 200 MW / 800 MWh system in the United States.
