Eutelsat deploys OneWeb connectivity to Greenland with the EU and Denmark
Eutelsat is participating in a project supported by the European Union, Greenland, and Denmark, aimed at extending its low Earth orbit satellite connectivity to remote regions and critical infrastructure on the island.
The initiative builds on the partnership between the French operator and Tusass, Greenland's public telecommunications operator.
OneWeb network deployed as part of a European project
Eutelsat (ISIN: FR0010221234) announced on September 7, 2026 its participation in the project called "Enhanced Satellite Connectivity Project for Greenland," launched with the support of the European Union, the Government of Greenland, and the Government of Denmark.
The project plans for Eutelsat to deploy OneWeb connectivity services in low Earth orbit (LEO) in partnership with Tusass, Greenland's public telecommunications operator and project lead. The stated objective is to enable populations in remote areas and critical infrastructure to access reliable communications services in regions where geographical and climatic conditions make the deployment of terrestrial networks difficult.
Launch in the presence of European officials
The project was launched on September 7, 2026 from Eutelsat's ground station in Greenland, in the presence of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen.
The initiative also brings together broader European satellite capacities, notably those provided by HispaSat, and relies on the cooperation established between partners of the SpaceRISE program, a consortium responsible for implementing the European Union's IRIS² secure connectivity program. Eutelsat will deploy its low Earth orbit capacities as part of the IRIS² program.
OneWeb adapted to high latitudes
Operating in polar orbit, Eutelsat's OneWeb constellation provides high-speed, low-latency connectivity at high latitudes, making it ideally suited for Greenland and the Arctic.
Eva Bisgaard, President of Eutelsat's Connectivity division, stated: "With the support of the European Union, Greenland, and Denmark, we will expand the coverage of OneWeb's LEO network to serve more remote territories." This project comes following the annual accounts closed on June 30, 2026, marked by the ramp-up of low Earth orbit activity, which represented 25% of revenue.
