IBA Coordinates Lifedestiny, a €4.4 Million European Project Against PFAS
The Belgian group, specialized in particle accelerators, leads a consortium aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of an integrated treatment process for so-called eternal pollutants.
The announcement is part of the European LIFE program, whose funding covers 60% of the project cost.
IBA announced on September 25, 2026 that it will coordinate LIFEDESTINY (Demonstration of Sustainable Technologies for Innovative PFAS remediation strategy), a project dedicated to contamination by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
The consortium aims to demonstrate the feasibility of an integrated treatment process covering the entire remediation chain: supply and preparation of contaminated materials, concentration, destruction, analytical validation, neutralization and potential reuse of residues.
The project will focus on a range of liquid and solid waste streams (industrial wastewater, contaminated soils, sludges and spent granular activated carbon). It combines concentration and destruction technologies in an approach presented as an alternative to confinement, landfilling and incineration methods.

As coordinator, IBA will provide its electron beam technology, based on its Rhodotron accelerator, for PFAS destruction in contaminated streams. The consortium brings together Haemers Technologies, Novobiom, Deme Environnement, Besix Environment, Cebedeau, Carmeuse Europe and District Cleantech, covering the entire value chain of PFAS treatment.
With a duration of four years, the project will run from September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2030. It represents an eligible total cost of €4,428,018.45, with a maximum European subsidy of €2,651,675.07, representing a funding rate of 60%.
According to Catherine Vandenborre, Chief Ventures & Corporate Officer at IBA, the project "complements other initiatives IBA is involved in to combat PFAS contamination" and aims to address PFAS destruction "comprehensively". The long-term ambition is to lay the foundations for a full-scale PFAS treatment hub, with a view to industrial deployment.
