Michelin launches a tire for lowered mining trucks, up to 12 tons per tire
In a press release published on October 21, 2026, the Clermont-based group presented the Michelin XDR Wide Body Truck, designed for a category of vehicles it describes as "experiencing strong growth" in mining operations and quarries. Michelin qualifies this new product as a "premium offering" and presents the safety of people and assets as its "top priority".
A segment previously dominated by third-party products
According to the press release, Wide Body Trucks offer "a good balance between load capacity, safety and acquisition cost", which explains their growing adoption in many mining operations around the world. Michelin indicates that it is leveraging its experience in mining applications and electric vehicles to position itself in this segment, which it describes as "previously dominated by third-party products".
The group specifies that this tire accompanies the evolution of fleets toward more efficient transport solutions and "increasingly electrified". Its teams developed and commercialized the product in less than two years, based on thorough field analysis.
For Kevin Maleterre, director of Michelin's off-road B2B markets, "Wide Body Truck vehicles are taking on a growing role in mining operations". He adds: "we are putting our expertise in mining applications at the service of this new generation of vehicles, with a clear ambition: to help our customers combine safety, productivity and the evolution of their fleets".

From a technical standpoint, the Michelin XDR Wide Body Truck features a carcass fully reinforced with thick steel wires, designed to withstand high loads and speeds as well as punctures. It allows transporting up to 12 tons per tire with a recommended pressure of 9 bars.
According to Michelin, these recommendations are "significantly lower than the levels generally observed in this segment", which reduces the risk of bursting. The group also highlights traction on soft or muddy terrain and a tread designed for resistance to damage, grip and durability.
The company indicates that this design helps reduce unplanned downtime and maintenance costs, and improve equipment availability. The tire will be marketed in an initial size, 16.00 R25, on November 1st, 2026, before the arrival of complementary sizes intended to gradually expand the offering in this segment.
