Philips honored in Istanbul: two AI projects in primary healthcare awarded at ITEA Awards 2026
The Dutch group announced that two public-private research collaborations it leads have been recognized at the ITEA Awards of Excellence 2026, presented in Istanbul. These initiatives focus on integrating artificial intelligence into care pathways and processing data from fiber optic sensors.
SYMPHONY awarded for connected healthcare ecosystems
The SYMPHONY project received the ITEA Award of Excellence in the "Exceptional Excellence" category for connecting healthcare data, clinical workflows and AI-based decision support tools across open and interoperable ecosystems.
SYMPHONY developed a reusable, vendor-independent reference architecture, applied to four clinical domains: prostate cancer, aortic aneurysm, atrial fibrillation and multiple sclerosis. Clinical partners include Leiden University Medical Center, Amsterdam University Medical Center and Karolinska University Hospital.
As part of this project, Philips developed automatic segmentation and measurement technology for vascular structures on medical images, intended for the evaluation and monitoring of aortic aneurysms. This functionality obtained FDA approval and CE marking, and is integrated into AV Vascular, a component of the Philips AV Cardiovascular Suite.
AI FORSchung distinguished for fiber optic data compression
The AI FORSchung project received the ITEA Award of Excellence for Innovation for developing AI-based methods to compress and analyze large volumes of data from fiber optic sensors.
Fiber Optic RealShape (FORS) technology is used for medical device navigation during image-guided procedures, generating significant volumes of position data. According to Philips, the work demonstrated that this data could be compressed more than 20 times while maintaining performance across evaluated datasets.
Both projects were conducted as part of ITEA, a research, development and innovation cluster of the Eureka program dedicated to software innovation, funded by several national authorities including the Dutch agency RVO.
