Philips Integrates Disney into Pediatric MRI to Reduce Children's Anxiety
Philips and Disney announced on Thursday the integration of Disney characters and stories into the Dutch group's Ambient Experience for MRI platform, deployed in 87 countries to help children cope better with medical imaging exams.
Global Integration to Reduce Anxiety in Young Patients
Disney content (Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Marvel superheroes, Star Wars universe, and Disney Princesses) are directly incorporated into the immersive Philips Ambient Experience for MRI environment. This system uses soothing lighting, sound, and visual elements to help children relax before and during the examination. MRI exams pose particular challenges for young patients: they require complete immobility for up to 40 minutes in a large machine that produces significant noise. According to the press release, 66% of pediatric patients report anxiety during these scans.
Clinical Results and Initial Deployment
A multicenter study conducted across six European hospitals shows that the integrated audio-visual intervention reduces post-exam stress by 43% in children aged 6 to 10 years, compared to the pre-exam situation. Interruptions during scans decreased by 63% compared with procedures without intervention. The first adopting hospitals include Rady Children's Health in California and Calderdale Royal Hospital in the UK. Philips Ambient Experience for MRI remains the only MRI platform using these Disney-themed contents. Disney provides the images and graphic content at no cost, as part of its previously announced $100 million commitment to more than 1,700 children's hospitals and pediatric facilities in 45 countries.
