Rémy Cointreau shares plunge, lagging indicator of the SBF 120
Rémy Cointreau declined sharply on Monday in a quasi-stable SBF 120, deepening its weekly retreat and remaining under selling pressure. The cognac group's stock is now trading well below its short-term moving averages, in a sector context that remains challenging for French spirits.
A decline that reflects a marked short-term downward trend
Rémy Cointreau fell 2.21% to €43.30 in trading, while the SBF 120 advanced 0.05% and the CAC 40 gained 0.12%. The stock ranks 113th out of 120 securities in its index, among the biggest losers in the SBF 120. Over the week, the decline reached 5.62%, amplifying pressure that has been building for several sessions.
The cognac group is suffering from unfavorable sector dynamics: according to the FEVS 2024 report, cognac exports fell 10.9% in value, and French spirits overall declined 6.5%. Pernod Ricard, the only comparable available in the sector, fell 1.26% in trading, a sign of broader pressure on French spirits exporters.
Moving averages providing resistance and net short positions still significant
The stock is trading below the 20-day moving average at €46.26 (a gap of -6.40%) and below the 50-day moving average at €45.44 (a gap of -4.71%). These two averages form a coherent technical ceiling above the current price, particularly as resistance is identified at €49.02, far from current levels. Only the 200-day moving average at €41.25 remains below the current price, offering medium-term support at a 4.97% distance. The RSI at 45 remains in neutral territory, with no oversold signal despite the accumulated decline.
Furthermore, according to available filings, four funds have accumulated 4.75% of Rémy Cointreau's capital in net short positions, declining slightly by 0.61 percentage points over thirty days (compared to 5.36% a month ago). This level remains elevated, reflecting persistent skepticism from some institutional investors regarding the stock, although recent trends show a slight reduction in these bearish bets. Upon publication of the FY 2025 annual results published on April 30, 2026, the company had identified among its main risks the negative impact of currencies (between -25 and -30 million euros on current operating profit) and declining Chinese demand. The 200-day moving average at €41.25 represents the next reference level in case of continued decline.
