Waga Energy details an Andalusian project already integrated into its portfolio of 59 projects
Waga Energy continues its expansion in Spain with a new site located in Andalusia. The planned unit near Granada is already included in the group's portfolio of 59 projects.
A contract to upgrade landfill gas at Alhendín
Waga Energy has signed a contract with FCC Medioambiente to purify the gas from the Ecocentral landfill site at Alhendín, in the province of Granada (Andalusia, Spain). FCC Medioambiente operates the site on behalf of the Diputación de Granada. The French producer will finance, build, own and operate a gas purification unit based on its patented technology. The installation is designed to treat up to 2,400 m³/h of landfill gas. Its commissioning is scheduled for 2028.
Estimated production and injection into the local network
The unit will produce approximately 273,000 MMBtu (80 GWh) of biomethane per year, a volume that the company compares to the annual gas consumption of approximately 16,000 households in Spain. The biomethane will be injected directly into the local gas network via a connection of approximately 6 kilometers constructed as part of the project. Waga Energy will sell the biomethane and share revenues with FCC Medioambiente. According to the company, the conversion of methane from waste will avoid the emission of approximately 19,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year.
A third Spanish project out of four signed to date
This contract, signed in November 2025, constituted Waga Energy's third project in Spain out of a total of four projects signed to date, and is already included in the group's portfolio of 59 projects. As of the date of the press release, Waga Energy operates 38 biomethane production units in France, Spain, Canada and the United States, with an installed capacity of more than 7.1 million MMBtu (2.1 TWh) per year. Twenty-one units are under construction in France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Canada and the United States.
